Kim Philby, Traitor Extraordinare. One of the best spy books I've eve read, and it has the added advantage of being true. This is what must be the definitive biography of Kim Philby, the British spy, whom everyone -- everyone -- felt was the last person who could ever commit treason. But as the book unfolds, the astonishing deeds he committed against his country are stunning. Philby was a senior intelligence executive for MI6 and, therefore, was in on just about everything the agency was doing over a decade or so. Bewildered MI6 and MI5 operatives simply couldn't fathom how almost every operation they launched against the Soviets failed. And in the failing, literally hundreds of operatives lost their lives.. Obviously, there was a mole in place but certainly not Kim Philby. How could it be? Well, all bad things must end and Philby's end came, although in a very sloppy manner. His escape to Russia robs us of closure. This is a fascinating book about a very dismal chapter in the history of British intelligence.

Dark, Not Hiaasen's Best On the plus side, Tourist Season had the usual Hiaasen over-the-top wit.On the down side, it was a bit too dark for my tastes. It may not have come off the same way in the 80's when it was written, but terrorism played for laughs just does not work in this day and age.We are used to the bad guys getting their comeuppance in horrible, outrageous ways from Haiaasen, but in this case so do a lot of victims whose only crimes are vacationing or retiring in Florida. I found that off-putting, especially since Hiaasen obviously has a lot of sympathy for these particular bad guys, who are killing random people in hopes of driving people away from Florida in order to ebb the development that is hurting the environment.Not an altogether bad read. Funny at times. Uncomfortable at times. There are many other better options from Hiaasen.An amazing tale. This is a great read, perhaps less speckled with Hiaasen's brilliant humor than his other works, but with a far more poignant message. To say more would give away the story. Having read all his novels at least twice, I think this one may contain the most important statement. Very highly recommended.The Orange Bow!I Game will never be the same Tourists and civic leaders are being targeted by a rag-tag group of terrorists in Miami. The idea is to rid Florida of developers, bankers and, in fact, everybody. A newspaperColumnist, an inept Cuban bomb maker, a washed up ex-football player and a Seminole Indian hatch their plans.When the ultimate target, the Orange Bowl Queen is discovered, Brian Keyes is hired by her father as body guard and "baby sitter" . It's not all bad. The girl is 19, pretty, and no air-headed pageant winner. Brian comes to respect her and more. The plot is fast paced, the action realistic, and the characters are by turns funny, tragic and idealistic . There are twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.

Greatest item I have ever decided to buy. My daughter is 10 years old and I've always told her she can tell me anything. When I found this journal, I thought I'd give it a try. Not only has it created a special bond between us, but she feels more open to write down questions or ideas to share with me that may otherwise be too embarrassing for her to share otherwise. She'll write in it and put it on my nightstand. I make it a point to give her the advice she needs or just tell her an equally embarrassing story so she doesn't feel alone. I make it a point to get it back to her night stand as soon as possible so she feels like it's important enough and that I truly do care about what she's thinking and feeling. Too often we get so busy and wrapped up in other things, we forget these little humans we're raising really need our undivided attention!They don't seem to have one of these books for "Mom and Son" but my 8 year old son soon wanted this special bond also. I purchased a regular "manly" looking journal and wrote a very special message on the inside cover for him. He's my tough child. The one that fights back with everything. I cannot believe the change in him almost immediately after starting the journal. He was daddy's boy almost his entire 8 years. Now we have such an amazing bond because he feels he can tell me anything. His first entry was about a girl who likes him at school. It was my chance to write down how special girls are and the right way to treat them.We do a lot of different things, like at dinner we ask what their favorite part of their day and the worst part. I tell them everyday to make sure they do at least one act of kindness a day, but more importantly I ask them what they noticed someone did for them as an act of kindness. I want them to keep their eyes and hearts open to realize there is good in the world and it happens everyday to all of us. Even doing these little things, I wanted something more and these journals are perfect!If you haven't don't this yet and want a way to bring you and your children closer, I highly suggest doing this. All the great advise my mom taught me before she passed away can now be shared in words with my children and they seem to hold on to the words better than if I spoke them.Adorable I bought this for myself and my almost 11 year old. The book is aesthetically pleasing and the cover has a nice feel to it.I read through the book and I'd like to highlight some fantastic things right off the bat....1- Questions or topics are suitable for a wide array of ages. Many are "too big" for my 11 yr old but many are perfect. I bought the book in the hopes that we can write in it throughout the years...so this is perfect! I can see us writing in it tonight and throughout her high school and college years. I'll write a couple topics/questions for some examples--Here's the story of the most embarrassing thing that happened to me in school and how I got through it...-Before I fall asleep, I think about...- my biggest regret...2.The size is perfect3. It comes with two attched, ribbon, bookmarks. One for mom and one for daughter.So, happy customer here... You can't beat the price for this adorable journal.Great Book for Older Daughters as Well I am nineteen, and I recently bought this book for my mom for mother's day. She was completely stunned and thrilled by the idea of a mother-daughter journal. We have already written in a couple of the beginning entries each which ask things like-"Favorite song..." and "Favorite thing to do with mother/daughter...," and filling out these random but entertaining questions is a great way to start the journal as well as dive into the more thoughtful questions which involve things like first memories.After reading several of the customer reviews of this book, I was a little hesitant to buy it because most of the reviews involved the daughters being no older than twelve. But I assure every mother and daughter that this is a great book for older ages as well as long as the mother and daughter are close-such as is my experience. Even though I am nineteen, this book does not seem childish or the entries forced because we enjoy having this new ability to bond. It also seemed personal at least for us since I write stories, so this was like offering a branch of my life to my mom who doesn't really share in this part of my life.It is also great because it allows for very short yet heartfelt entries which do not take much time to complete. Another wonderful feature of this book is that is helps both the mother and the daughter relive memories as well as share each other's. It is both light and entertaining which allows for a good distraction and escape from the hassle and occasional chaos of the world. The best part of this book, though, is that it lets mothers and daughters share in one another's lives as well as create new memories and stories together.I highly recommend this book to any mother and daughter team wanting an excuse or way to bond. Some of the questions, such as the ones which involve dating, do seem meant for children probably no younger than six, but there are many more fun entries and activities such as guessing and drawing which items are in the other's purse/bookbag. They also involve future advice for dating, so these questions may seem a little late for teenagers and older daughters. Yet, I found this book to overall be a wonderful idea as well as an outlet, and I applaud the mother-daughter team who began this journal. It is truly a great buy!

Reacher in peak form, nothing better There's a strict formula to Reacher novels: big man gets off a bus in a small town, bumps into bad men doing bad things to decent people.In this case, it's an unnamed town ruled by rival factions of Ukrainians and Albanians, and an older couple in deep to a loan shark on the Ukraine side. Reacher steps in, intending to do one small good deed, but things escalate -- as they tend to do, in Reacher's world -- and within a day, Reacher finds himself in the middle of an escalating gang war, where the two factions agree on only one thing: get rid of the big ugly guy. His only real ally: a younger, dark-haired waitress who likes to "do one thing a day that scares me " and gets involved in the action for no good reason, really, but she's fun, so why not?After twenty-something books, Lee Child has the formula dialed in. Some outings are better than others, and this is right at the top. The action starts immediately and does not let up. I had to put the book down periodically just to settle my nerves; Reacher does not get that chance himself. He's dealing with not one, but two, sets of bad guys, with an ugly assist from a broken health care and judicial system that put the old folks in this situation in the first place. There's also a welcome steady pulse of humor in the book, as when the waitress notes to Reacher as he prepares to go after two men in a car, "They both have guns," to which he responds, "For now. In a minute I will have them."As usual, it becomes impossible to see how Reacher is ever going to solve these problems; and as usual, he does, in ways that are both blunt force and crafty.Sometimes I do wish that Reacher would evolve a bit; I was sad, a few books ago, when Lee Child raised the possibility of Reacher having a daughter; it would be good to see his universe expand a bit, to expand the stakes of his life. But as long as he's living like a modern day Shane, riding into town, kicking butt, and riding out again, I'll admit: no one does it better.Reacher is Back!!! I have read every Jack Reacher novel and generally looked forward to a new release like that of a favorite band or movie. Anticipation and excitement! In this case I got my copy of “Blue Moon”, grabbed a bag of Fritos and a cold drink and settled in for a good read.I was slightly hesitant, because the last two Reacher novels were not very good – at least not by Lee Child’s standards. The parts of Reacher that resonated most with readers had been missing. The last two novels felt like they had been phoned in. I was worried that maybe Jack Reacher had hit the end of the road…I had nothing to worry about it – Reacher is back! All of the character traits that made Jack Reacher a great protagonist are back in style. He calculates the physics of a thrown punch. He helps the downtrodden and beats up the bad guys. He prefers sitting in the back seat of cars because he’s so big and doesn’t like to drive!Without spilling too much detail, Reacher befriends the Shevicks, an elderly couple who is down on their luck. They’re in a jam with the worst kind of mobsters and Reacher jumps in with both feet to help them out. In the end, he takes on multiple gangs, wins every fight and gets the girl…Yes, Lee Child has a formula – and it’s a simple one. Make the bad guys bad, the victims sad and put Reacher into the mix. This time he gets a little help from some other bit players, but it’s mostly Reacher’s game. The plots are not complicated and there are holes in the story lots of “What-ifs” if you want to dig deep, but it’s great summer reading and all the pieces of the puzzle don’t need to be perfect for the tale to be told.I ended up reading most of the book in one evening; the rest the next morning – a very satisfying read.For fans of Lee Child and Jack Reacher, you will enjoy this book!Initially Comic Plot Soon Turns to Bloody Carnage In the beginning, BLUE MOON: A JACK REACHER NOVEL is comical (like a Donald Westlake novel), as Reacher inadvertently sets off a Ukrainian/Albanian gang war by killing two Albanian quick-loan enforcers. The rival gangs’ misinformed leaders (Dino, Gregory) start knocking off each other’s men, two by two, as they try to keep the score even. But the fun soon shifts to grim bloody carnage, once the gang leaders identify Reacher as the catalyst for their losses.In the novel, Reacher thwarts the robbery of an old man (Aaron Shevick), takes Shevick’s place in repaying an Albanian mafia loan, and then becomes personally committed to recovering money that Shevick desperately needs. Shevick’s daughter was severely wronged by the now-missing head (Trulenko) of a startup software company, who pocketed the company’s cash and let it go bankrupt. The Ukrainians are protecting Trulenko, who still has the cash.Both the Albanian and Ukrainian capos eventually--and still mistakenly--decide that “Shevick” (actually Reacher) is a person sent in by outsiders to start a gang war and let the rivals knock each other off so that the outsiders can move in. Can Reacher stay out of the gangs’ grasp for long enough to set things right for Shevick?The novel is an exciting page turner with a lot of drama. While it’s unlikely that Reacher’s complex tactics would have succeeded in real life, they’re totally believable in the context of the novel. The supporting characters (Abby, Hogan, Barton, Vantresca, Aaron and Maria Shevick) are likeable and interesting. Jack Reacher fans won’t be disappointed, as Reacher performs at his crusader best.

My kids are very proud of themselves for being able to pick out a book from the set, go to one of the beanbag chairs in my reading area, and tackle the book all alone before asking me for help. Tickles me to no end.Kindergarten Books I have been looking for beginner books JUST like these for almost a year. I am ordering more after I post this review. My son is in kindergarten, learning sight words and these are perfect.Irresistible indeed I bought this set to see if it can help my 3yr old to have more interest in reading, and it turns out that the books are indeed irresistible to read, thanks to the the simple sentences and pictures. Some of his favorites are " Hats, Hats, Hats", "Shapes for lunch", and"My Meatballs" etc, there are plenty to choose from! We read one every day after dinner and before going to bed.
