Title: The Man Who Knew the Way to the Moon Pdf

The story of John C. Houbolt, an unsung hero of Apollo 11 and the man who showed NASA how to put America on the moon.

Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon.

Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space.

Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable. But this junior engineer was irrepressible. He stood by his concept, fired off memos to executives, and argued that LOR was the only way to success.

For the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, hear the untold story of the man who helped fulfill Kennedy's challenge to reach the moon and begin exploring the final frontier.

Fascinating This was quite fascinating. I don't know much about the moon landing so all of this was new to me. I really enjoyed listening to the accounts and struggles of John Houbolt. I really liked that they included interviews with his wife and other key people. Overall, this was fascinating and I really think people should listen to it, especially if you are interested in space travel or the Apollo moon landing.Distorts history and misrepresents issues I worked in the space program in the generation after the Apollo missions. This story is told as if sending people to the moon and returning them again was the final objective. It wasn't. Do you really think that the people running the space program wanted the missions to the moon to just be a political publicity stunt? And you actually believe that the people who argued for a larger and more sustainable mission to the moon were just influenced by 1950s science fiction style thinking? The people who won this argument turned the manned missions to the moon into a very expensive and very dangerous publicity stunt with obviously diminishing returns if we continued to do it. It basically killed manned exploration of space.Things might have worked out differently. We might have gotten to the moon decades later, but with a much larger crew with a much longer mission. We might have done this more safely and less expensively. We know how to get to the moon with far less fuel than Apollo used. We have sent unmanned spacecraft to the moon with just solid fuel rockets. Going that way takes months. But if you can make months in space comfortably survivable for a large crew, then why not do it that way?Once going to the moon and coming back again was an already accomplished stunt, we didn't have much incentive to do it right. The Man Who Knew the Way to the Moon might have cost us more than we know. The different lunar theories that were nearly tried. Very detailed and interesting story that most people never knew.
